Habitat
This shrew inhabits moist forests, grasslands, and areas with dense undergrowth in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. It prefers regions with leaf litter and proximity to water sources for foraging and shelter.
Diet
The Indochinese short-tailed shrew primarily eats insects, earthworms, and other small invertebrates, which it hunts actively in leaf litter and soil. It feeds mostly at night and has a high metabolic rate, requiring frequent meals throughout its active periods.
Behavior
This shrew is solitary and territorial, marking its area with scent and aggressively defending it from intruders. It is primarily nocturnal, spending the day in burrows and emerging at night to forage. Notable behaviors include rapid movement and a high-pitched vocalization used for communication.
Conservation Status
The IUCN has not assessed Cryptotis griselda, but as a species in Southeast Asia, it may face threats from habitat loss due to deforestation; population trends are unknown.
