Habitat
The Ili pika inhabits high-altitude rocky slopes and boulder fields in the Tian Shan mountains of northwestern China. They prefer elevations above 2,800 meters where there are ample crevices for shelter and alpine vegetation. This terrain provides protection from predators and harsh weather conditions.
Diet
The Ili pika primarily feeds on grasses, herbs, and other alpine plants, which it gathers during the day. It exhibits hay-piling behavior, collecting and storing vegetation for winter consumption. Feeding occurs mainly in the morning and late afternoon when temperatures are milder.
Behavior
Ili pikas are solitary animals that live in individual territories within rock piles, marking their areas with scent. They are diurnal, active during the day to forage and vocalize with high-pitched calls to communicate or warn of predators. They exhibit alert and cautious behavior, quickly retreating to crevices when threatened, and do not hibernate but remain active year-round with reduced activity in winter.
Conservation Status
The IUCN lists the Ili pika as Endangered, with a decreasing population trend due to habitat loss from climate change and human activities. Major threats include warming temperatures that reduce their high-altitude habitat and fragmentation from infrastructure development.
