Habitat

This species primarily inhabits the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil, favoring dense undergrowth in tropical and subtropical forests. It can also be found in shrublands and areas with thick vegetation, often at elevations up to 1,000 meters, where it seeks cover in leaf litter and fallen logs.

Diet

Ihering's three-striped opossum mainly eats insects such as beetles, ants, and spiders, along with other small invertebrates like earthworms. It occasionally consumes fruits and small vertebrates, and it forages actively at night using its keen sense of smell.

Behavior

This opossum is nocturnal and solitary, spending its days hidden in burrows or dense vegetation to avoid predators. It exhibits territorial behavior by marking areas with scent glands and is primarily terrestrial, though it can climb trees when necessary. They are generally elusive and quick to flee from threats.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss due to deforestation in the Atlantic Forest is a major threat.
