Diet

Hugh's hedgehogs mainly consume insects like beetles, earthworms, and snails, supplemented by small amounts of plant material such as fruits and roots. They forage nocturnally using their acute sense of smell, typically spending several hours each night searching for food.

Behavior

Hugh's hedgehogs are nocturnal and solitary, emerging at night to forage and avoiding social interactions except during mating. They exhibit territorial behavior by marking areas with scent glands and quickly curl into a defensive ball when threatened. They are adept diggers, creating burrows for shelter and hibernation in colder months.

Conservation Status

Hugh's hedgehog is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from agriculture and road mortality.
