Habitat

This species inhabits freshwater rivers, streams, and lakes in West Africa, particularly in the Geba, Corubal, and St. John Rivers of Guinea-Bissau and Liberia. It prefers areas with rocky substrates and moderate water flow, often hiding among vegetation or under rocks. These environments provide ample cover and food sources in tropical climates.

Diet

Hornet tilapia primarily feeds on insects, small crustaceans, and plant matter, using its mouth to sift through substrate. It exhibits opportunistic feeding behavior, actively foraging during the day in shallow waters. Feeding peaks in the morning and evening when prey is more abundant.

Behavior

Hornet tilapia are territorial and aggressive, especially males defending nesting sites in rocky areas. They are diurnal, active during the day for feeding and social interactions, often forming small groups outside of breeding season. This species engages in mouthbrooding, where females carry eggs and fry in their mouths for protection.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
