Habitat

This species inhabits the grasslands and savannas of the Highveld region in South Africa, preferring areas with moist, sandy soils for burrowing. They are typically found at elevations between 1,000 and 2,000 meters, avoiding dense forests or arid regions.

Diet

The Highveld golden mole primarily feeds on earthworms, insects, and other soil invertebrates like beetle larvae. It uses its sensitive snout to detect prey while tunneling underground, and feeding occurs mainly at night when it is most active.

Behavior

Highveld golden moles are solitary and territorial, maintaining extensive underground burrow systems. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging to forage or seal burrow entrances during the night. They communicate through vibrations in the soil and exhibit aggressive behavior when defending their territory.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from agriculture and urbanization.
