Habitat
This species inhabits coral reefs, rocky crevices, and lagoon areas in the Indo-Pacific region, often at depths of 1 to 30 meters. It prefers warm tropical waters with abundant hiding spots, ranging from the coasts of Japan and Australia to the Indian Ocean and Philippines. These environments provide shelter and ample hunting opportunities among reefs and rubble.
Diet
The Highfin moray primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and occasionally octopuses, using its sharp teeth to capture prey in ambushes. It is a nocturnal hunter, emerging from crevices at night to forage in reef areas. Feeding behavior involves lurking in hiding and striking quickly when prey comes close.
Behavior
Highfin morays are solitary and territorial, often residing in specific crevices or holes within coral reefs to avoid threats. They are primarily nocturnal, spending daytime hidden and becoming active at dusk to hunt. This species exhibits aggressive defensive behavior, opening its mouth wide to display teeth when threatened, and it rarely interacts with others of its kind except during mating.
Conservation Status
