Habitat
Hershkovitz's titi monkeys primarily inhabit tropical rainforests in the western Amazon basin, including parts of Peru and Brazil. They prefer dense undergrowth and riverine forests, typically at elevations below 500 meters. These areas provide ample tree cover for their arboreal activities.
Diet
Hershkovitz's titi monkeys mainly consume fruits, leaves, and insects, with a preference for ripe fruits when available. They forage in the lower canopy and understory during the early morning and late afternoon, supplementing their diet with flowers and occasional small invertebrates. Feeding behavior includes careful selection to avoid toxic plants.
Behavior
Hershkovitz's titi monkeys live in monogamous pairs or small family groups and are highly territorial, defending their area with loud duet calls. They are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, and exhibit strong pair bonding with mutual grooming. These monkeys are generally shy and avoid ground activity to minimize risks.
Conservation Status
Hershkovitz's titi is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to ongoing habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including logging, road development, and human encroachment in the Amazon.
