Habitat
This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests in northwestern Colombia, preferring dense, lowland forests with ample canopy cover. They are found in areas with high humidity and access to rivers or streams, avoiding open or disturbed habitats.
Diet
Hernandez-Camacho's night monkey feeds mainly on fruits, insects, and nectar, often foraging in the forest canopy at night. They supplement their diet with leaves and flowers, using their strong grip to access hard-to-reach food sources. Feeding occurs primarily during the early night hours when they are most active.
Behavior
These monkeys are strictly nocturnal, spending days sleeping in tree hollows or dense foliage and becoming active at dusk to forage and socialize. They live in small family groups consisting of a monogamous pair and their offspring, exhibiting territorial behavior by marking boundaries with vocalizations and scents. They communicate through a variety of calls and are generally shy, avoiding human contact.
Conservation Status
IUCN status is Vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture; population trends are decreasing with major threats including fragmentation of rainforest habitats.
