Habitat
Gulper sharks inhabit deep-sea environments on continental slopes and outer shelves, typically at depths of 200 to 2,000 meters. They prefer temperate and tropical waters in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, often over soft substrates like mud or sand. These sharks are adapted to low-light, high-pressure conditions far from shore.
Diet
Gulper sharks primarily feed on bony fish, squid, and crustaceans, which they capture using their large mouths to engulf prey whole. They are likely opportunistic hunters in deep waters, with feeding possibly occurring at night or during vertical migrations. Little is known about specific feeding times due to the challenges of observing them in their habitat.
Behavior
Gulper sharks are generally solitary and exhibit benthic or pelagic behavior in deep waters, with possible nocturnal activity patterns. They are not known to be territorial but may undertake vertical migrations to follow prey or environmental changes. Due to their deep-sea habitat, detailed observations of their social interactions are limited.
Conservation Status
Listed as Data Deficient by IUCN.
