Habitat

This shrew inhabits montane forests and highland areas in Guatemala, preferring moist environments with dense undergrowth and leaf litter. It is typically found at elevations between 1,000 and 3,000 meters, avoiding open or arid regions.

Diet

The Guatemalan broad-clawed shrew primarily feeds on insects such as beetles, ants, and earthworms, as well as other small invertebrates. It forages actively at night, using its keen sense of smell to locate prey in leaf litter and soil.

Behavior

This shrew is solitary and nocturnal, spending much of its time burrowing in soil or under leaf litter to hunt and avoid predators. It exhibits territorial behavior, marking areas with scent and vocalizing with high-pitched calls when threatened. Little is known about social interactions, but it is generally active and energetic.

Conservation Status

The IUCN lists the Guatemalan broad-clawed shrew as Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss from deforestation poses a potential threat.
