Habitat

This shrew primarily inhabits montane forests and grasslands on Mindanao Island in the Philippines, at elevations above 1000 meters. It prefers moist, dense vegetation areas with leaf litter and undergrowth for cover. These habitats provide ample insects and protection from predators.

Diet

The Greater Mindanao shrew feeds mainly on insects such as beetles, ants, and earthworms, as well as other small invertebrates like spiders. It is nocturnal and forages actively on the ground, using its keen sense of smell to locate prey. Feeding occurs frequently due to its high metabolic rate.

Behavior

The Greater Mindanao shrew is solitary and nocturnal, spending days hidden in burrows or under logs and becoming active at night to forage. It exhibits territorial behavior, marking areas with scent to deter others, and avoids social interactions except during mating. They are known for rapid movements and a high activity level to meet their energy needs.

Conservation Status

The IUCN lists the Greater Mindanao shrew as Vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including logging and land conversion.
