Habitat
This species primarily inhabits dry deciduous forests and spiny bushlands in western Madagascar. They prefer areas with dense vegetation and tree hollows for shelter, typically at elevations up to 500 meters. Geographic range is limited to specific regions like the Menabe and Kirindy forests.
Diet
Gray-backed sportive lemurs mainly consume leaves from various trees such as tamarind and figs, supplemented with fruits, flowers, and occasionally bark. They are nocturnal feeders, foraging alone at night to avoid predators, and spend much of their time in the canopy. Their feeding behavior involves selective browsing to meet nutritional needs.
Behavior
Gray-backed sportive lemurs are solitary and territorial, with individuals maintaining exclusive home ranges marked by scent glands. They are strictly nocturnal, emerging at dusk to forage and move through trees using agile leaps. Notable behaviors include vocalizations for communication and huddling in tree hollows during the day for rest.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Vulnerable, with population trends declining due to habitat destruction from deforestation and agriculture. Major threats include fragmentation of forests and hunting for the pet trade.
