Habitat

This species primarily inhabits large rivers and their tributaries in Southeast Asia, favoring fast-flowing waters with rocky or sandy substrates. It is commonly found in the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Mae Khlong basins in countries like Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia, often in areas with moderate depths and abundant vegetation.

Diet

The Golden belly barb feeds on small invertebrates such as insects and crustaceans, as well as algae and plant matter. It forages actively during the day, often in schools near the river bottom, using its barbels to detect food in the substrate.

Behavior

Golden belly barbs are schooling fish that form groups for feeding and protection, making them more active in larger numbers. They are diurnal, spending daylight hours foraging and resting in quieter waters at night, and may exhibit migratory behavior upstream during the rainy season. They show territorial aggression around spawning sites but are generally non-aggressive otherwise.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
