Habitat

This species inhabits deep, offshore waters of the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific Ocean, typically in areas with depths greater than 1,000 meters. They prefer pelagic environments far from continental shelves, avoiding coastal regions.

Diet

Ginkgo-toothed beaked whales primarily feed on deep-water squid and fish, such as lanternfish, using suction feeding during long dives. They hunt in the mesopelagic zone at depths of 500-2,000 meters, often at night when prey is more abundant.

Behavior

These whales are typically solitary or found in small groups of up to six individuals, and they are known for their deep diving capabilities, often remaining submerged for over an hour. They exhibit elusive behavior, making them difficult to observe, and are generally not territorial but may migrate seasonally. Little is known about their social interactions, but they communicate with clicks and whistles for echolocation and possibly social purposes.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Data Deficient due to limited data on population size and trends. Major threats include bycatch in fisheries and potential impacts from marine noise pollution.
