Habitat

Giant pandas primarily inhabit temperate broadleaf and mixed forests in the mountainous regions of central China, such as Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. They prefer elevations between 1,600 and 3,400 meters where dense bamboo understories provide cover and food. These areas feature cool, moist conditions with seasonal fog.

Diet

Giant pandas are almost exclusively folivorous, consuming large quantities of bamboo shoots, leaves, and stems, which make up 99% of their diet. They eat up to 38 kg of bamboo daily and feed primarily during the day, spending 10-16 hours foraging. Occasionally, they supplement with other plants, fruits, or small animals like rodents.

Behavior

Giant pandas are solitary animals, maintaining individual home ranges that overlap little with others except during mating season. They are primarily diurnal, spending most of their time eating or resting in trees, and communicate through vocalizations, scent marking, and bleats. They exhibit low territorial aggression but will defend food sources if necessary.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the giant panda is Endangered, with population trends showing a slow increase due to conservation efforts. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation, bamboo die-offs, and human encroachment.
