Habitat

Gervais' beaked whales inhabit deep offshore waters of the tropical and warm temperate Atlantic Ocean, preferring depths greater than 1,000 meters. They are often found in areas with steep underwater slopes and are rarely seen near coasts.

Diet

They primarily feed on deep-water squid and fish, such as lanternfish, using suction feeding during long dives. Hunting occurs at great depths, often exceeding 800 meters, and likely takes place at night when prey is more active.

Behavior

Gervais' beaked whales are typically found in small groups of 2-10 individuals, though they can be solitary. They are deep divers, capable of holding their breath for over an hour, and exhibit elusive behavior, avoiding boats and surfacing discreetly. They may migrate seasonally but specific patterns are not well-documented.

Conservation Status

Gervais' beaked whale is listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, due to insufficient data on population size and trends. Major threats include bycatch in fishing gear and noise pollution from military sonar and shipping.
