Habitat

They primarily inhabit tropical rainforests and lowland forests in Central America, from southern Mexico to Panama. These monkeys prefer the upper canopy of mature trees and can also be found in secondary forests, though they avoid highly disturbed areas.

Diet

Their diet mainly consists of ripe fruits such as figs and bananas, which they forage in the forest canopy. They also consume leaves, flowers, and occasionally insects, feeding primarily during the day in small groups.

Behavior

They live in fission-fusion social groups of 20-40 individuals that split and merge throughout the day. These monkeys are highly arboreal and diurnal, using brachiation to swing through trees, and they communicate with a variety of vocalizations and gestures. They exhibit territorial behaviors, defending food sources with alarm calls.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies Geoffroy's spider monkey as Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss and hunting. Major threats include deforestation for agriculture and road development.
