Habitat

The Gansu shrew inhabits alpine meadows, shrublands, and forested areas in the mountainous regions of Gansu and Qinghai provinces in China, typically at elevations between 2,000 and 4,000 meters. It prefers moist environments with dense vegetation near streams and rocky outcrops.

Diet

The Gansu shrew primarily eats insects, earthworms, and other invertebrates, using its sharp teeth to capture and consume prey quickly. It forages actively both day and night, relying on its acute sense of smell to locate food in leaf litter and soil.

Behavior

Gansu shrews are solitary and territorial, defending small home ranges with scent markings. They are primarily nocturnal, spending the day in burrows and emerging at night to forage; they exhibit high activity levels and quick movements to evade threats.

Conservation Status

The IUCN has not assessed the Gansu shrew, but potential threats include habitat loss from agriculture and climate change in its limited range.
