Habitat
This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests and secondary forests in Borneo, preferring lowland and montane areas up to 1,000 meters elevation. It thrives in dense undergrowth with plenty of cover from trees and shrubs, avoiding open areas.
Diet
The Four-striped ground squirrel feeds mainly on fruits, seeds, and nuts, supplemented by insects and occasionally small invertebrates. It forages on the ground and in low vegetation during the day, often caching food for later use. Feeding peaks in the early morning and late afternoon when resources are abundant.
Behavior
This squirrel is diurnal and primarily solitary or found in pairs, spending much of its time foraging on the ground or in low branches. It exhibits territorial behavior by marking areas with scent glands and quickly retreats to burrows when threatened. Notable behaviors include agile climbing and alarm calls to warn of predators.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Four-striped ground squirrel as Least Concern, with a stable population trend due to its wide distribution in Borneo. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation.
