Habitat
Forkbeard primarily inhabit the continental shelf and slope in the Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Black Sea, at depths ranging from 50 to 800 meters. They prefer rocky, muddy, or sandy bottoms where they can hide and forage. This demersal species is often found in areas with moderate currents.
Diet
Forkbeard feed mainly on small fish, crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, and cephalopods such as squid. They are nocturnal hunters, actively foraging on the sea floor at night to ambush prey. Their feeding behavior involves using their barbel to detect food in low-visibility conditions.
Behavior
Forkbeard are solitary and territorial fish that spend most of their time near the sea floor. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to hunt, and exhibit hiding behaviors in rocky crevices during the day. This species is not known for migratory patterns but may move to deeper waters seasonally.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
