Habitat

Fantail soles inhabit sandy or muddy bottoms on the continental shelf in the eastern Pacific Ocean, from Monterey Bay in California to the Gulf of California in Mexico. They prefer depths of 10 to 200 meters, often near islands or in bays where they can bury themselves in sediment. This environment provides ample cover and food sources.

Diet

Fantail soles primarily eat small crustaceans, polychaete worms, and bivalves found on the seafloor. They use their downward-facing mouth to suck up prey while lying camouflaged, and feeding typically occurs at night when they are most active. This opportunistic feeding behavior helps them conserve energy in their benthic environment.

Behavior

Fantail soles are solitary bottom-dwellers that spend most of their time buried in sand or mud to avoid detection. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to feed, and exhibit minimal territorial behavior. During the day, they remain inactive and well-camouflaged on the ocean floor.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
