Habitat

Fanrays primarily inhabit continental shelves in the Northwest Pacific, favoring sandy or muddy bottoms at depths of 10 to 100 meters. They are commonly found in coastal waters around Japan, China, Korea, and nearby regions, often in areas with soft substrates for burrowing.

Diet

Fanrays feed mainly on bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as crabs, shrimp, and small fish. They use their flattened bodies to ambush prey on the seafloor, typically hunting at night when they are most active.

Behavior

Fanrays are primarily nocturnal, spending the day buried in sand to avoid predators and emerging at night to feed. They are solitary but may form loose groups in areas with abundant food. They exhibit territorial behavior around feeding grounds, using their spines for defense.

Conservation Status

Listed as Vulnerable by IUCN.
