Habitat
Fallfish primarily inhabit cool, clear streams, rivers, and lakes in eastern North America, favoring areas with gravel or rocky bottoms and moderate currents. They are commonly found in the Atlantic Slope drainages from Virginia to Quebec, as well as in the Great Lakes region, avoiding stagnant or polluted waters.
Diet
Fallfish are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on aquatic insects, crustaceans, small fish, and plant matter. They forage primarily during the day in riffles and runs, using their sensitive mouths to detect and consume prey from the substrate or water column.
Behavior
Fallfish are schooling fish that form loose groups in open water, particularly in larger rivers and lakes. They are diurnal and active swimmers, often seeking cover under rocks or logs during low light, and males become territorial when defending spawning nests. They exhibit rapid darting movements when threatened or feeding.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
