Habitat

This species primarily inhabits fast-flowing streams, rivers, and wetlands in the Himalayan region, from northern India and Nepal to southern China and Myanmar. They prefer high-altitude areas between 2,000 and 4,000 meters, with rocky substrates and dense vegetation near water sources.

Diet

Elegant water shrews mainly consume aquatic insects, small crustaceans, and fish, which they catch by diving and foraging underwater. They are nocturnal feeders, actively hunting during the night to avoid predators. Feeding behavior involves quick dives and surface swims to capture prey.

Behavior

Elegant water shrews are solitary and territorial, marking their areas with scent to defend against intruders. They are primarily nocturnal, spending their active time swimming and foraging in water, and they build nests in burrows near streams. These shrews exhibit excellent diving abilities, allowing them to evade threats effectively.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend in most of its range. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and water pollution in the Himalayan region.
