Habitat

This species primarily inhabits montane forests and highland regions in Cameroon and Nigeria. It prefers moist, dense undergrowth with leaf litter and is often found near streams or rocky areas. These environments provide cover and abundant prey.

Diet

Eisentraut's mouse shrew mainly eats insects, earthworms, and other small invertebrates. It forages actively at night using its acute sense of smell, and feeds frequently due to its high metabolic rate. Hunting occurs in leaf litter and soil where prey is abundant.

Behavior

These shrews are solitary and territorial, defending small home ranges with scent markings. They are primarily nocturnal, spending days in burrows or under logs, and exhibit rapid, darting movements while foraging. They communicate with high-pitched vocalizations and can be aggressive when threatened.

Conservation Status

According to the IUCN Red List, Eisentraut's mouse shrew is classified as Vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including logging and human encroachment.
