Habitat
They primarily inhabit cold, deep offshore waters of the Southern Hemisphere, including the sub-Antarctic regions, southern Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. These whales prefer pelagic environments with depths over 200 meters, avoiding shallow coastal areas except during migrations.
Diet
They mainly feed on squid, such as the arrow squid, and various fish like mackerel and herring, using echolocation to hunt in coordinated groups. Feeding typically occurs at night in deep waters where prey is abundant.
Behavior
They live in large, matriarchal pods of 10 to 100 individuals, exhibiting strong social bonds and cooperative hunting strategies. These whales are highly active during the day, often breaching, spyhopping, or bow-riding boats, and are known for mass stranding events possibly due to navigational errors.
Conservation Status
IUCN status is Least Concern, but populations face threats from bycatch in fishing nets, marine pollution, and climate change impacts on prey availability.
