Habitat

Eastern spinner dolphins primarily inhabit tropical and subtropical waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean, often in offshore areas with depths greater than 200 meters. They prefer warm waters near continental shelves and islands, avoiding colder regions.

Diet

They mainly feed on small fish such as lanternfish and squid, hunting in coordinated groups. Feeding typically occurs at night when prey rises to the surface, using echolocation to locate food. Their diet varies slightly by location but remains focused on pelagic species.

Behavior

Eastern spinner dolphins are highly social, forming large pods of up to several hundred individuals that travel and hunt together. They are known for their energetic spinning and leaping behaviors, often performed during the day to communicate or play. These dolphins are active both day and night, with strong migratory patterns following food sources, and they exhibit tight group cohesion for protection.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Data Deficient, but populations face threats from bycatch in fisheries and habitat degradation. Population trends are declining in some areas due to human activities.
