Habitat
Dwarf spinner dolphins inhabit tropical and subtropical waters of the Pacific Ocean, particularly around oceanic islands like Hawaii. They prefer pelagic environments with depths over 200 meters, often found in areas with clear, warm waters. These dolphins are highly mobile and can be seen in both coastal and offshore regions.
Diet
Dwarf spinner dolphins primarily feed on small fish such as lanternfish and squid, which they hunt in large groups. They exhibit feeding behavior at dawn and dusk, using echolocation to detect prey in deep waters. Their diet also includes shrimp and other small cephalopods.
Behavior
Dwarf spinner dolphins are highly social, living in large pods of up to several hundred individuals, and they are known for their acrobatic spins and leaps out of the water. They are diurnal, active during the day with resting periods at night, and exhibit strong group coordination during feeding and travel. These dolphins are curious and may approach boats, but they can be territorial in defending their pods from threats.
Conservation Status
The dwarf spinner dolphin is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, but populations face threats from bycatch in fisheries and habitat degradation. Population trends are stable in some areas but declining due to human impacts.
