Habitat

Dwarf sperm whales inhabit tropical and warm temperate oceans worldwide, preferring deep offshore waters beyond the continental shelf, often at depths greater than 200 meters. They are commonly found in areas with high squid populations and avoid coastal regions. Their range includes the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

Diet

Dwarf sperm whales primarily feed on squid, such as those from the family Ommastrephidae, along with small fish and occasionally shrimp. They are deep divers, hunting at night in the mesopelagic zone using echolocation to locate prey. Feeding occurs mainly during nocturnal hours when their prey migrates upward.

Behavior

Dwarf sperm whales are typically solitary or found in small groups of up to 10 individuals, often including mothers with calves. They are shy and elusive, spending much of their time diving to depths of 500-1000 meters for food, and they use echolocation for navigation and hunting. Territorial behavior is minimal, but they may exhibit defensive responses like releasing a dark ink when threatened.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Data Deficient due to limited data on population size and trends, though threats include bycatch in fisheries and marine pollution. Population declines may be occurring in some regions from habitat degradation and ship strikes.
