Habitat

This species inhabits humid tropical forests, including primary and secondary growth in the Amazon basin of South America, such as in Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia. It prefers dense understory vegetation and areas near rivers or streams for cover and foraging. They are adaptable to fragmented forests but avoid open or arid environments.

Diet

The Dusky slender opossum primarily eats insects like beetles and ants, supplemented by fruits, seeds, and occasionally small vertebrates such as lizards or frogs. It forages nocturnally on the ground and in trees, using its keen senses to locate food. Feeding behavior includes caching excess food for later consumption.

Behavior

Dusky slender opossums are solitary and nocturnal, spending their active hours climbing trees and foraging for food. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking areas with scent glands, and are known to play dead when threatened as a defense mechanism. They are agile and arboreal, rarely interacting socially except during mating.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the Dusky slender opossum is Least Concern, with a stable population trend due to its wide distribution. Major threats include habitat destruction from deforestation and agriculture, though it is not currently facing significant decline.
