Habitat

They primarily inhabit tropical and subtropical forests in peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, and Myanmar. These monkeys prefer dense rainforest canopies, including lowland and hill forests up to about 1,000 meters elevation, and can adapt to secondary growth areas.

Diet

Dusky leaf monkeys mainly consume leaves, fruits, flowers, and buds from trees, with a preference for young, nutritious foliage. They are folivorous and feed primarily during the day in the forest canopy, using their specialized stomachs to digest high-fiber plant material.

Behavior

They live in social groups of 5-20 individuals, usually led by a dominant male, and exhibit strong territorial behavior through vocalizations and displays. Dusky leaf monkeys are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees leaping between branches, and they communicate with a variety of calls to maintain group cohesion.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting for the pet trade. Major threats include fragmentation of forest habitats and human encroachment.
