Habitat
The Dusky fruit bat inhabits lowland and hill rainforests in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. They prefer areas with abundant fruit trees and water sources, often roosting in tree hollows or caves. This species avoids open areas and is typically found in dense forest canopies.
Diet
Dusky fruit bats primarily feed on ripe fruits such as figs, bananas, and mangos. They forage at night using echolocation to locate food, and their feeding behavior aids in seed dispersal across the forest. They may occasionally consume insects or nectar for additional nutrition.
Behavior
Dusky fruit bats are nocturnal and highly social, forming colonies of up to several hundred individuals in roosts. They exhibit agile flying patterns for foraging and grooming behaviors within groups. They are not strongly territorial but may defend roosting sites from intruders.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Dusky fruit bat as Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and agricultural expansion.
