Habitat

This species inhabits deep oceanic waters in tropical and subtropical regions, primarily in the Indian Ocean around Sri Lanka and possibly extending to the western Pacific. They prefer areas with depths exceeding 1,000 meters, avoiding coastal zones and favoring open ocean environments.

Diet

Dereniyagala's beaked whale primarily feeds on deep-sea squid and fish, such as lanternfish. They use suction feeding during long, deep dives to capture prey, likely hunting at night when these organisms migrate to shallower depths.

Behavior

These whales are typically found in small groups of 2-7 individuals, often including mothers and calves, and are highly elusive with deep-diving capabilities reaching over 1,000 meters. They exhibit social behaviors like coordinated swimming and may be more active at night, with little known about territoriality due to their deep-sea habitat. Males use their erupted teeth in displays, possibly for mating competitions.

Conservation Status

Dereniyagala's beaked whale is listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, with population trends unknown due to rarity and poor data. Major threats include bycatch in fisheries and potential impacts from noise pollution and marine debris.
