Habitat
Dent's mona monkey primarily inhabits lowland rainforests and swamp forests in the central Congo Basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They prefer dense, tropical vegetation near rivers for cover and food sources. This species is typically found at elevations below 1000 meters.
Diet
Dent's mona monkeys mainly consume fruits, leaves, and flowers, supplemented by insects like beetles and ants. They also eat small vertebrates such as lizards and birds' eggs. Feeding occurs primarily in the canopy during daylight hours, often in social groups.
Behavior
Dent's mona monkeys live in social troops of 10-30 individuals, typically led by a dominant male. They are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, with active periods in the early morning and late afternoon. They display territorial behavior through vocalizations and displays to defend their range.
Conservation Status
Dent's mona monkey is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting pressure. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including human encroachment and fragmentation of rainforest habitats.
