Habitat

This species inhabits open grasslands, steppes, and semi-desert areas in eastern Mongolia, northern China, and parts of Russia. It prefers dry, flat terrains with sparse vegetation where it can dig burrows for shelter. These areas often include sandy or loess soils that facilitate burrowing.

Diet

The Daurian ground squirrel primarily feeds on seeds, grasses, roots, and leaves, with occasional insects and fruits. It forages during the day, often storing food in burrows for winter. Feeding peaks in the morning and late afternoon when it is most active.

Behavior

Daurian ground squirrels are diurnal and live in colonies with complex burrow systems, exhibiting territorial behavior around their dens. They hibernate during the winter months, emerging in spring to mate and forage. Social interactions include alarm calls to warn of predators and occasional aggressive displays during mating season.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the Daurian ground squirrel is Least Concern, with a stable population trend due to its wide distribution. Major threats include habitat loss from agriculture and overgrazing, but it is not currently facing significant declines.
