Habitat

This species inhabits shallow coastal waters and rocky reefs in the Eastern Pacific, often found at depths of 1 to 30 meters among coral, rocks, and seagrass beds. It prefers warmer tropical and subtropical regions, avoiding open water and favoring areas with ample hiding spots for ambush predation.

Diet

The darkblotch scorpionfish primarily consumes small fish, crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, and occasionally mollusks. It employs an ambush feeding strategy, remaining motionless until prey comes within range, and is most active during twilight hours for hunting.

Behavior

This scorpionfish is solitary and territorial, spending most of its time camouflaged on the seafloor to avoid detection. It exhibits ambush predation, striking quickly at prey with its large mouth, and is generally nocturnal but can be active during the day if food is scarce. It shows little social interaction outside of mating.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
