Habitat

This species inhabits lowland rainforests, mangroves, and secondary forests in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and surrounding islands. It prefers areas with abundant fruit trees and dense vegetation for roosting and foraging. Geographic range is limited to tropical regions with high humidity.

Diet

The Dark Tube-nosed fruit bat primarily feeds on fruits such as figs, as well as nectar from flowers and occasionally insects. It forages at night using its keen sense of smell to locate food, often visiting the same fruiting trees repeatedly. Feeding behavior includes hanging upside down while consuming soft fruits.

Behavior

This bat is nocturnal, emerging at dusk to forage alone or in small groups, and roosts in tree foliage during the day. It exhibits territorial behavior around food sources, using vocalizations to communicate, and is generally solitary outside of mating seasons. Males may perform display flights to attract females.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend and no major threats identified, though habitat loss from deforestation could pose a future risk.
