Habitat
This fish inhabits rocky reefs, coral formations, and deep-water structures in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, from the Gulf of California to Peru. It prefers depths of 50 to 200 meters, where it seeks shelter in crevices and ledges. These areas provide protection and abundant food sources in warmer, tropical waters.
Diet
Hemanthias signifer primarily feeds on small fishes, shrimps, and other crustaceans found near reefs. It hunts in schools during the day, using ambush tactics to capture prey in mid-water columns. Feeding activity peaks in the morning and late afternoon when visibility is good.
Behavior
Hemanthias signifer is a schooling species that forms loose groups for protection and foraging, often seen darting in and out of reef structures. It is diurnal, active during the day and resting in crevices at night, with territorial displays around feeding sites. This fish is generally non-aggressive but can be skittish when approached by divers or predators.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
