Habitat

This snake eel inhabits tropical and subtropical marine waters of the Indo-Pacific, often in shallow coastal areas with sandy or muddy bottoms. It prefers depths from 10 to 100 meters, frequently burrowing into substrates near coral reefs or seagrass beds for shelter. Geographic preferences include the Indian Ocean and western Pacific, avoiding very deep or open ocean environments.

Diet

Dainan umihebi primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods, using its sharp teeth to capture prey in ambush attacks. It is a nocturnal hunter, emerging from burrows at night to forage in coastal waters. Feeding behavior involves lying in wait partially buried in sand, striking quickly when prey comes close.

Behavior

This species is solitary and primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours buried in sand or mud to avoid detection. It exhibits territorial behavior around its burrow, emerging at night to hunt or explore. Notable behaviors include rapid swimming bursts for prey capture and the ability to reverse direction quickly in confined spaces.
