Habitat
They primarily inhabit montane and submontane forests in the Cross River region of Nigeria and Cameroon. These areas feature dense vegetation, hilly terrain, and elevations up to 1,600 meters, providing ample cover and food sources.
Diet
Cross River gorillas mainly eat leaves, stems, fruits, and bark from forest plants, with a preference for herbaceous vegetation. They forage for food during the day, spending several hours feeding to meet their high-energy needs, and occasionally consume insects or roots.
Behavior
They live in small groups of 2-15 individuals, typically led by a dominant silverback male who protects the group. These gorillas are diurnal, spending their days foraging and resting, and exhibit territorial behavior through vocalizations and chest-beating displays.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Cross River gorilla as Critically Endangered, with a rapidly declining population due to habitat loss from deforestation and poaching. Conservation efforts include protected areas and community-based initiatives to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
