Habitat
This species primarily inhabits arid and semi-arid grasslands, shrublands, and open woodlands in central and western Australia. They prefer areas with dense grass cover for shelter and feeding, avoiding dense forests or mountainous terrain. Geographic range is limited to regions with reliable water sources despite the dry conditions.
Diet
The Crescent nail-tail wallaby feeds mainly on grasses, herbs, and leaves, with a preference for fresh green shoots. They are primarily nocturnal feeders, grazing during the cooler night hours to avoid daytime heat and predators. Feeding behavior includes selective browsing, which helps them obtain necessary nutrients in nutrient-poor environments.
Behavior
Crescent nail-tail wallabies are mostly solitary or live in small, loose groups, with individuals maintaining small home ranges. They are nocturnal, spending days hidden in grass tussocks or burrows to avoid heat and predators, and become active at dusk for feeding and moving. Territorial behavior is minimal, but males may show aggression during mating season, and they communicate through thumping their hind feet.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species. Major threats include land clearing for agriculture and competition with livestock.
