Habitat

Crabeater seals primarily inhabit the pack ice of the Antarctic region, preferring areas with extensive sea ice for breeding, resting, and avoiding predators. They are found in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, often on floating ice floes rather than land.

Diet

Crabeater seals mainly feed on Antarctic krill, which they filter from the water using their specialized teeth, consuming up to several kilograms per day. They occasionally eat small fish or other crustaceans, and feeding typically occurs during the day in open water near ice edges.

Behavior

Crabeater seals are generally social, forming large groups on ice floes but hunting solitarily in the water. They are diurnal, spending much of their time hauled out on ice to rest and avoid predators, and exhibit minimal territorial behavior except during breeding. They are agile swimmers, capable of diving to depths of up to 500 meters to forage.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of crabeater seals is Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though major threats include climate change reducing sea ice habitat.
