Habitat
This fish inhabits freshwater rivers and streams in the Amazon basin, preferring slow-moving waters with abundant vegetation and sandy or rocky substrates. It is commonly found in the Amazon and Araguaia rivers, avoiding fast currents and deep open waters. Geographic preferences include tropical regions of South America with warm temperatures.
Diet
The common aracu primarily feeds on algae, detritus, and small invertebrates like insects and crustaceans. It uses its specialized mouth to graze on submerged rocks and plants, often foraging in groups. Feeding activity peaks during the day in shallow waters.
Behavior
The common aracu is a schooling fish that forms groups for protection and foraging, making it less vulnerable to predators. It is diurnal, active during the day and resting in sheltered areas at night, with territorial behavior observed during spawning seasons. These fish are generally adaptable but may scatter quickly when threatened.
