Habitat
They inhabit coastal and shelf waters in cold, temperate regions, primarily around southern South America including Argentina, Chile, and the Falkland Islands, as well as the Kerguelen Islands in the southern Indian Ocean. These dolphins prefer shallow waters less than 200 meters deep, often near kelp forests and rocky shores.
Diet
Commerson's dolphins primarily eat small fish such as anchovies and sardines, as well as squid and crustaceans. They hunt in groups using echolocation to locate prey, typically feeding during the day in shallow waters.
Behavior
They are highly social, living in small pods of up to 20 individuals, and are known for their playful and acrobatic swimming, often leaping and bow-riding boats. These dolphins are active during the day, showing territorial behavior in feeding areas, and communicate using a variety of clicks and whistles.
Conservation Status
Commerson's dolphins are classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable global population but declining trends in some areas due to threats like bycatch in fishing nets and habitat degradation from pollution.
