Habitat

They primarily inhabit the tropical rainforests of Colombia, especially in the Amazon basin and Andean foothills, at elevations up to 2,500 meters. These monkeys prefer the dense canopy of old-growth forests, where they can move easily through the trees. They avoid open areas and disturbed habitats.

Diet

Columbian woolly monkeys mainly eat fruits, supplemented by leaves, flowers, and occasionally insects or seeds. They forage in groups during the day, spending several hours searching for food in the forest canopy. Feeding behavior includes selective fruit picking and sometimes dropping items to the ground.

Behavior

They live in large social groups of 15-50 individuals with a complex hierarchy, exhibiting behaviors like grooming and vocal communication to maintain bonds. Columbian woolly monkeys are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees and traveling long distances for food. They show territorial defense through loud calls and displays, but groups often overlap in range.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Critically Endangered due to a declining population trend, with major threats including habitat destruction from deforestation and hunting for the pet trade.
