Habitat
Clouded leopards primarily inhabit dense tropical and subtropical forests, including evergreen and deciduous woodlands. They are found in Southeast Asia, from the foothills of the Himalayas through mainland countries like Thailand and Myanmar, to islands such as Borneo and Sumatra. These cats prefer areas with thick vegetation for cover and hunting.
Diet
Clouded leopards mainly eat small to medium-sized mammals like deer, wild pigs, and monkeys, as well as birds and reptiles. They are solitary hunters that ambush prey, often climbing trees to stalk or pounce. Feeding typically occurs at night or during dawn and dusk when they are most active.
Behavior
Clouded leopards are solitary and territorial animals, marking their ranges with urine, feces, and tree scratches. They are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, spending much of their time in trees where they are agile climbers. These cats are elusive and avoid humans, communicating through vocalizations like growls and mews during mating.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the clouded leopard as Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and poaching for the illegal wildlife trade. Major threats include fragmentation of forests and human-wildlife conflict.
