Habitat
Clearnose skates inhabit shallow coastal waters of the western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts to northern Florida, often over sandy or muddy bottoms. They prefer depths of 10 to 100 meters and are commonly found in estuaries, bays, and nearshore areas. This species avoids very deep waters and thrives in temperate to subtropical environments.
Diet
Clearnose skates primarily feed on bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as crabs, shrimp, worms, and small mollusks. They also consume small fish like sand lance or juvenile flounder, using their pectoral fins to stir up the sediment. Feeding occurs mainly at night when they are more active on the ocean floor.
Behavior
Clearnose skates are generally solitary and benthic, spending much of the day buried in sand to avoid predators and emerging at night to feed. They exhibit territorial behavior during mating seasons and are not aggressive, often fleeing from threats by gliding away quickly. This species is known for its ability to change coloration slightly for camouflage and can be curious around divers or bait.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
