Habitat
This species primarily inhabits montane rainforests and dense undergrowth in the mountains of Papua New Guinea, at elevations between 1,000 and 2,500 meters. It prefers areas with thick vegetation and leaf litter for cover, avoiding open or disturbed habitats. These environments provide ample moisture and food sources.
Diet
Clara's spiny bandicoot is omnivorous, feeding on insects, earthworms, and other invertebrates, as well as fruits, seeds, and occasionally small vertebrates. It forages at night by digging in the soil with its snout and claws, spending several hours each evening searching for food. Feeding behavior is solitary and ground-based.
Behavior
Clara's spiny bandicoot is nocturnal and solitary, emerging at night to forage and resting in burrows or dense vegetation during the day. It exhibits territorial behavior, marking areas with scent glands and avoiding direct confrontations with others of its kind. They are agile diggers and can move quickly through underbrush to evade threats.
Conservation Status
Clara's spiny bandicoot is listed as Endangered by the IUCN due to habitat loss from logging, agriculture, and mining in Papua New Guinea. Population trends are declining rapidly, with major threats including predation by introduced species and fragmentation of their montane forest habitats.
