Habitat
This species primarily inhabits streams, rivers, and wetlands in mountainous regions of China, often in forested areas with dense vegetation. It prefers moist environments with access to water sources, typically at elevations between 1000 and 3000 meters. They are adaptable but avoid arid or heavily urbanized areas.
Diet
The Chinese water shrew mainly eats insects, earthworms, and small aquatic invertebrates like crustaceans. It hunts by probing the soil and water with its sensitive snout, often at night or dawn. Feeding behavior includes both terrestrial foraging and diving in streams to catch prey.
Behavior
Chinese water shrews are solitary and territorial, defending small home ranges along waterways. They are primarily nocturnal, spending days in burrows and emerging to forage or swim. Notable behaviors include rapid swimming to escape threats and using echolocation-like clicks for navigation in dark environments.
Conservation Status
The IUCN Red List classifies Cryptotis styani as Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and water pollution in their Chinese range.
